“…In 140 Characters or Less” is a brand new feature on Yellowhammer Politics. We’ll be interviewing politicians, insiders, activists and other notable figures — with the catch being that their answers must be in 140 characters or less. When possible, we’ll conduct the interviews in real-time on Twitter — then post them on YH when they’re complete. (Follow us on Twitter)
Up first is Alabama’s Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard. He’s fresh off the release of his new book, “Storming the State House,” and tweeted with us today about the SCOTUS Obamacare ruling, the Romney campaign, what we can expect in the legislature next session, and more… All in 140 characters or less.
@YHPolitics further proof that the legislature is the last line of defense btwn the overreaching fed govt. & the people. We won’t back down.
— Mike Hubbard (@SpeakerHubbard) July 2, 2012
@YHPolitics no question. @MittRomney raised over $4mill in the 24 hrs after the ruling. Intensity wins elections — intensity is on our side.
— Mike Hubbard (@SpeakerHubbard) July 2, 2012
@YHPolitics I’m humbled by the response. It was a privilege to tell the story of the teamwork it took to bring conservative change to AL.
— Mike Hubbard (@SpeakerHubbard) July 2, 2012
@YHPolitics definitely. Outlets like @politico @DailyCaller @RickAndBubba @GovMikeHuckabee & others really helped spread the word.
— Mike Hubbard (@SpeakerHubbard) July 2, 2012
@YHPolitics a free and strong press is essential. We need them holding us accountable and that becomes tougher with less reporters. (1/2)
— Mike Hubbard (@SpeakerHubbard) July 2, 2012
@YHPolitics I’m optimistic that “new media” will ultimately strengthen the press in the long term. But the growing pains sure are tough(2/2)

@YHPolitics totally unexpected honor. It’s a privilege to represent AU in Montgomery, & now they’re naming a building after me? Incredible.
— Mike Hubbard (@SpeakerHubbard) July 2, 2012
@YHPolitics We recently started working on the agenda. We’ll continue charting a conservative, pro-business course, that’s for sure.
— Mike Hubbard (@SpeakerHubbard) July 2, 2012
@YHPolitics my pleasure

Republican, here’s the only audit needed, how many Republicans were in the legislature prior to 2010 and then after? But some of us are wondering why Armistead and Co are expensing everything from whataburger and car washes to thousands of dollars in out of state travel. The job of the party is to elect Republicans, not expense their burgers and white gravy while flying all around the country on the donor’s dime. Audit that. Should be easy, just gander at the campaign finance disclosure forms on file with the good ole FEC.
Time to go enjoy some more kabobs and jacks biscuits, hmmm thank you donors!
Romney raised $4mm the first day after the SCOTUS ruling? That’s incredible. Well done on the book Mr. Speaker. It was an enjoyable read. All of us in the chamber of commerce appreciate what you’ve done for our state and look forward to more economic development as a result of your and Governor Bentley’s efforts.
I didn’t realize Hubbard had gotten that much of national attention for his book. anyone here read it? worth the time?
sure, hand your money over to hubbard while he uses government money to line the pockets of david azbell so he can do this: http://vimeo.com/43126922
No audit question?
Mike may be optimistic that these f*&#ers at Advance can figure out how to run a decent news website but I’m not. A pay wall is probably the only sustainable revenue model for online news. WSJ, NYT and others have figured that out. al.com doesn’t get enough eyeballs to by ad revenue only. He’s right that new media has a chance to make the press stronger though but they need to find some YOUNG PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING.
Is Hubbard saying that Alabama will opt out of Obamacare completely, not expand medicaid, and not implement any type of healthcare exchange? Is that decision his or Bentleys because Bentley seems to want some form of an exchange although I’m not exactly sure how it would work.
Well deserved honor with the new building. Here’s hoping Hubbard becomes to Auburn what Shelby has been to Alabama for the past couple of decades.
That’s a great point on intensity winning elections. I keep going back and forth between being really angry at Chief Justice Roberts and hopeful that he’s smarter than the rest of us and is gutting the commerce clause to win the war, even though he had to lose the Obamacare battle to do it.
