BREAKING: Chris Christie Will Seek Re-election

Sources close to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told Yellowhammer this morning that Christie has filed the necessary paperwork to begin fundraising for a 2013 re-election campaign.

While it has long been believed the larger-than-life Governor would seek re-election, it hasn’t been a lock. In spite of Christie’s national profile, he’s still a Republican governor in a deep blue state.

Speculation about Christie’s immediate plans can now be put to rest. He will indeed be running for Governor of New Jersey again in 2013.

But other important questions still remain. Most notably, will Cory Booker, the popular Democrat mayor of Newark, challenge Christie for the governorship?

New Jersey insiders currently feel that Booker is leaning more toward a 2014 U.S. Senate run than he is a 2013 run for Governor. New Jersey’s senior U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg is expected to retire in 2014, leaving an open seat at which Booker could to take a shot. He has already established a federal PAC to explore a senate run.

Christie appears well positioned for re-election, especially if Booker doesn’t run. But even if he does, it doesn’t change the fact that Christie is incredibly popular in New Jersey. In a recent Rutgers-Eagleton poll, Christie received a whopping 67% favorability rating. In a PublicMind poll published by Wall St. Journal today, he’s all the way up to 77%.

Christie is also one of the early frontrunners for 2016 presidential race. It will be worth watching how he continues to balance governing in a blue state in the national spotlight with his Republican presidential primary ambitions.

I wish he wouldn’t run again and I hope he does NOT run for President. He was a BUTT KISSER to El Presidentee B.O. (I know, the storm). Just like El Presidentee B.O. is a BUTT KISSER to the foreigners

…which is exactly why Dunce and Loud Democrat would like him to run on the GOP ticket.

I hope booker runs for senate. We need more young up and comers rising nationally. My concern is that we do republicans usually do and nominate someone from the old guard like Hillary.

Watching Tea and Red discuss politics is like watching Harry and Loyd try to give the Hawaiian tropic girls directions. A guy like Chris Christie is the only prayer you idiots would have in 2016. You’ll probably end up nominating Mike Huckabee. LULZ.

Dear Dunce — you must be a liberal leftie. You know the kind, I’m sure — full of human compassion who despises anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Tell us who you think the GOP should run in 2016, and I guaran-dam-tee you I’d oppose that choice.

It’s probably pointless but I’ll ask, who’s the source? Is yellowhammer trying to branch outside of AL politics?

How much sense would it make to protect sources in the article but burn them in the comment section. Just sayin.

I’m glad to see yellow hammer taking on more national stories. Keep the Alabama stuff going though because there’s no other trustworthy source left.

Cicero — basically, this story was on the web a week or so ago. Cory Booker was prominently mentioned as positioning himself for either a gubernatorial or US Senate run in the next cycle. As for Christie, I really like his stand against public unions which, I know for a fact, are — or were — killing New Jersey. But he’s a wash on the Second Amendment from what I’ve seen, and the 2A is pretty much my default position as regards candidates.

In spite of my concerns I’d like to see Christie run in 2016.

Usually I agree with you 100% Tea but this time I can’t. Northeastern moderates don’t win! Allen West has no chance after losing his House race but maybe some new leaders will arise in the next few years.

Well I’m not sure yet if he’s conservative or not. I just don’t think it’s realistic to expect him to govern from the far right in New Jersey. He’d never get any support. Have you seen Lincoln? It made me rethink a little my all or nothing attitude. I prefer Rubio right now of everyone.
